Dalston Ladies Vs Barrow Ladies
10th Oct 2004
0 - 1
Determined
to put behind them the previous weeks defeat, Dalston travelled to
Ulverston to face an experienced Barrow team.
The
game was only minutes old when Dalston lost experienced defender Sue
Henshall with a recurring ankle injury. In spite of this setback,
Dalston started well and were soon exerting pressure on the Barrow goal.
Two penalty corners in quick succession could have seen Dalston open the
scoring but for some frantic defending by the home side. The attacking
tide soon began to turn and it was the Dalston defence who were pressed
in to action. Goalkeeper Laura Cunningham was confident in the Dalston
goal and substitute Rose Charters worked hard to clear the Dalston
lines. Barrow were also unable to convert a number of penalty corners
and even though the first half continued to provide
opportunities
for both sides, goals could not be found.
The
second half followed a similar pattern to the first. Dalston again
included a debutante in the side – Katie Rickerby coming in at center
forward and working hard to create space for Sheila Downie and Joanne
Keyden to attack the Barrow goal. Dalston were again paying the price of
not being able to turn pressure into goals, emphasized when, from
well-organized short corners, Barrow first hit the post and then scored
the opening goal. Good defensive work from Laura Clark prevented Barrow
from mounting further attacks. In spite of a final period of intense
pressure when a surging run from Katie Rickerby took her into the Barrow
circle, the equalizing goal just would not come for a disappointed
Dalston side.
